THE FIRST of seven AW139s for the Swedish Maritime Agency (SMA) was delivered to Skavsta airfield on September 10. After departing AgustaWestland’s Vergiate factoryin Italy at 10.20am it arrived at its new home around 7pm.
The SMA had announced an order for seven SAR configured AW139s on October 16, 2012 , with a contract subsequently being signed on November 20, 2012.
SAR detachments at Ronneby, Visby, Goteborg, Nortalja and Umea will also eventually receive the helicopter, which will replace the SMA’s fleet of nine SAR – & EMS-configured Sikorsky S-76A/C Spirits, currently responsible for all of Sweden’s SAR services.
